Wayne Lawrence was born in St. Kitts, West Indies, in 1974 and is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Lawrence was drawn to photography in September 1999 and has been committed to documenting the human condition ever since. After studying photography at Santa Monica College and Brooks Institute of Photography, Lawrence moved to New York City, where he has developed a unique approach to documentary portraiture. In October 2003, Lawrence was presented with the Life Magazine award for his efforts at the Eddie Adams Workshop. Lawrence is a member of Kamoinge, a New York-based collective of African American photographers.
